Uglich is a town on the River Volga
about 136 miles north of Moscow, Russia. A local tradition dates the town's
origin back to 937. It was first documented in 1148 as Ugliche Pole (Corner
Field). The town's name is thought to allude to the turn the Volga makes nearby.

Church of St Dimitry on the Blood. Uglich has
a long storied history. It was a favourite of Ivan the Terrible in the 16th
century. His son Dimitry was murdered in Uglich in 1591, and the brilliant
red Church of St. Dimitry on the Blood was built to honour the slain young
prince.
