Kazan is the capital city of the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, and one of Russia's largest cities. It is a major industrial, commercial and cultural centre, and remains the most important centre of Tatar culture. Kazan lies at the confluence of the Volga and Kazanka Rivers in central European Russia.

Kazan was founded on the site of the old village Bolgary settled by Tartar Bulgarians. Built in the 13th century in the reign of the Khan Sayan, the new town became the chief town of a khanate and has been the capital of the Tartar Republic since 1920.

Söyembikä Tower is constructed in six tiers to the height of 58 meters. It is probably the most familiar landmark and architectural symbol of Kazan. Once the highest structure of that city's Kremlin, it used to be one of the so-called leaning towers. By the early 20th century, its inclination was estimated at 194 cm.
