Puntas Arenas was founded in 1843 and is a regional capital on the Straights of Magellan at 54 South.

Wild life in Torres del Paine

     
Guanacos are related to the camel and llama family and are indigenous to southern Patagonia.  The young is called a Chulengo, and we were fortunate to see one about 1 to 2 hours after birth.

Puerto Williams

     
Puerto Williams sits on the southern shores of the Beagle Channel on Navarino Island.  Chile built a naval base here in 1953.  Also to be found here is the bow of the 'Elcho', the tug which rescued Shackleton's men from Elephant Island.
