Crazy
Horse Memorial
Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear wrote "My fellow chiefs and I would like
the white man to know the red man has great heroes, too." inviting sculptor
Korczak Ziolkowski to the Black Hills to carve Crazy Horse. The first blast
on 3 June 1948 took off 10 tons of rock. Work is now underway blocking
out the 22 storey high horses head. The photo to the right shows some
of the carving tools!
The viewing
veranda has 1/34 scale model of the famous Crazy Horse. Also shown is the
silhouette of the profile of Crazy Horse. The far right photo is of a
picture with the finished outline superimposed.
The
mountain sculpture has a 87ft 6in high head and 44 ft feather. The arm is
227 ft long and the hand 33 ft high. The horses head will be 219 ft
high with a 62 ft mane. In total it will be 563 ft high with a hole
110 ft wide and 100 ft high.
On the left is
a wooden carving of Crazy Horse's face.
On the right is a 9' 6" bronze carving
of Fighting Stallions.

Mount Rushmore
As
an idea to draw sightseers in 1923, state historian Doane Robinson suggested
carving giant statues in South Dakotas Black Hills. The sculptures
stand as a gateway to the West. Gutzon Borglum was engaged as sculptor, who
found the southeast facing wall of granite on Mount Rushmore to create a
work of art of national importance in commemoration of the foundation,
preservation and continental expansion of the United States.
The carving of
George Washington's head is as tall as a six story building. If his
body was carved from head to toe, the height of the full figure would be 465
feet. The head is 60 ft from forehead to chin.
The Washington
head was formally dedicated in 1930, followed by Jefferson in 1936, Lincoln
in 1937 and Roosevelt in 1939. Borglum dies in March 1941; the final
dedication was not held until 50 years later.
Mountain goats
were brought to the area in 1924 and have adapted well to the environment.
This one is at the end of a ledge a few inches wide!
Miscellaneous
A
lunch stop between Bandlands and Mount Rushmore also had a range of exhibits
and old photographs. It included a street displaying stuffed animals
and also this chapel.
